Geospatial Intelligence Technology: Managing Disasters…

In 2021, the geospatial market was dominated by defence and intelligence(14%), urban development (13%) and utilities segments(11%), cumulatively accounting for 38% of total geospatial market.

News Jungal Desk: The geospatial intelligence industry is projected to grow from $61 billion in 2020 to over $209 billion by 2030.

Geospatial Intelligence is the collection and integration of data from various technologies like satellites, sensors and aerial images to creat real time maps and simulations.

It uses tools like GIS(Geographic Information System), GPS(Global Positioning System) and Remote Sensing for geographic mapping and analysis.

These tools capture spatial information about objects, events and phenomena, static location data such as, position of road, earthquakeor malnutrition among children in a particular region, while dynamic location data such as, moving vehicle or pedestrian, the spread of infectious disease etc.

Significance:

The National Hurricane Centre relies on geospatial intelligence to monitor cyclone location, its formation and trajectory, which helps in resource allocation, issuing warnings and managing evacuations.

After 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria, geospatial Intelligence identified damaged and helped locating survivors and also facilitated establishments of aid stations and emergency supply distribution.

Tracking climate related variables like temperature, precipitation and ice to anticipate and prepare for environmental disturbances like heatwaves, flood and polar ice melt.

It also helps in Militry and civilian applications and Transport and Logistics.

Government’s Initiative to Promote Geospatial Techniology in India:

Guidelines for Geospatial Data, 2021:

Released by ministry of Science and Technology in 2021.

Deregulated and liberalized the Geospatial sector in India and making it more competitive.

National Geospatial Policy, 2022:

It was launched to streamline the utilization of geospatial intelligence.
