PM Vishwakarma Scheme: Empowering Traditional Artisans…

“Vishwakarma Jayanti is celebrated to honour Vishwakarma, the architect of the Gods in Hindu Mythology.”

Vishwakarma is also believed to be the architect of mythical city Lanka and the great image of Jagannatha at Puri in Odisha.

News Jungal desk: Recently, the Prime Minister of India has launched the Prime Minister Vishwakarma Scheme on the occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti.

Objectives:

It aims to uplift traditional artisans and craftspeople engaged invarious occupation such as blacksmithing, goldsmithing etc.

Encouraging the preservation of India’s rich cultural heritage of traditional crafts.

Encouraging the transition into formal economy and global value chain.

Main Features:

Scope and Coverage: It covers 18 traditional trade sectors, such as

Carpenters, Boat makers, Potters, Sculptors, Cobblers, Barbers, Blacksmiths, Locksmiths, Goldsmiths, Tailors, Basket/Mat/Broom makers/Coir weavers etc.

Artisans and Crafts people enrolled in the scheme will receive a PM-Vishwakarma certificate and identity card.

They will also be eligible for collateral free credit support of upto 1 lakh(first tranche)

and 2 lakh (second tranche) at a concessional rate of 5%.

It also offer stipend and incentives,

Rs 500 for skill training

Rs 1500 to purchase modern tools.

Registration will be completed at common service centres in villages.

Implementing Ministries are,

Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Nodal Ministry)

Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship

Ministry of Finance.

It will be Central Sector Scheme, fully funded by government of India.

It has a budget ranging from 13000 crore for five financial years from 2023-24 to 2027-28.

Significance:

Vishwakarmas pklay a critical role in society regardless of technological advancements.

There is a need to support and recognize these traditional artisans and crafts people and integrate them into the global supply chain.
