The scholarship for higher education for young achievers(SHREYAS) scheme has been launched to empower students from schedule casts(sc)and Other Backward Classes(obc) by providing them access to quality education.
Key Features:
News Jungal Desk: It is an umbrella scheme under the ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
It consists of four central sector sub schemes
1)Free Coaching Scheme for SC’s and OBC’s:
It provides high quality coaching to economically disadvantaged SC’s and OBC’s for competitive exams and admission to technical and professionals instuitutions.
Family income limit is 8 lakhs per annum.
Slots are allotted 3500 annually.
30% slots are reserved for females in both categories.
From 2014-15 to 2022-23 19,995 beneficiaries have benefitted from this scheme.
2) Top Class Education for SC’s:
Promote quality education among SC students after 12th class.
Family income limit is 8 lakhs per annum.
It covers 266 higher education institutes, including IIT’s, IIM’s and NIT’s.
Tution fees, academic allowance and other expenses are provided.
From 2014-15 to 2022-23, 21,988 beneficiaries have benefitted through this scheme.
3) National Overseas Scheme for SC’s:
Financial assistance is provided to selected students from SC’s, Denotified, Nomadic, Semi-Nomadic Tribes, traditional artisan categories for pursuing Masters and Ph.d courses abroad.
Income Ceiling, 8 lakhs per annum
Secure 60% marks in qualifying Exams
Below 35 years of age
Secured admission in top 500 QS ranking foreign institutes.
Scholarship, tution fees, contingency allowance, visa fees, free air passage are provided to the awardees.
From 2014-15 to 2022-23 , 950 beneficiaries have benefitted from this scheme.
4) National Fellowship for SC students:
It supports SC students pursuing M.phil/Ph.d degrees in sciences, humanities and social sciences in Indian universities by UGC.
Qualified for NET-JRF for science stream qualifying UGC-CSIR joint test.
Slots reserved , 2000 per year
550 for science stream
1500 for humanities and social sciences.
